Dairy free

My energy levels are ridiculously low lately! All I want to do is sleep! I can sleep at any given time no matter how many hours of sleep I've already banked. If I have a 4 hour nap at noon I can go back to sleep as soon as I wake up or stay up and go to sleep at a normal hour. I'm always tired! Which lead me to start thinking more into my diet. As much as I think I'm eating healthy... am I really?! What vitamin or nutrient could I be low in? Could I be anemic? Could I have low iron levels again?

When I got to the iron question in my head is when I started realizing I really don't eat a lot of red meat (main source of iron) at all anymore. Besides my burger at Harvey's on Thursday I haven't eaten any in a very long time. I have an appointment to get blood tests done on Wednesday so we will see for sure what is going on then. Last time I had my blood work done I did have an iron deficiency along with a vitamin D deficiency. I thought that I took care of my iron deficiency because I was eating more red meat after I found out but as I mentioned there hasn't been much in my diet lately

Cutting dairy out of my diet is something I've been trying to do for a very long time. Lately it's been easier than any other time I've tried. Mainly because when I drink milk I break out like crazy and I'm on a mission for looking great along with feeling great so dairy has to go. ALSO, dairy restricts the absorption of iron. I used to make my own almond milk for my smoothies and I really miss doing that. So, last night when I did my grocery shopping and found a bag of organic almonds at the superstore for $3.99 I couldn't resist! So I bought them and today I'm going to make my almond milk :) It's a very simple process and super easy to make!

Vanilla Almond Milk (yields 2-3 cups or so)
1 cup almonds, soaked 8-12 hours beforehand if it’s possible
4 cups water
6 dates or 1/4 cup agave
1 tsp pure vanilla extract (or the contents of a vanilla bean)

So first thing is to soak your 1 cup of almonds in water over night. Then rinse them off and put them in your blender with 4 cups of water. Once they're blended well you need to strain the almond pulp from the milk. The best thing to use for straining is cheese cloth but I just use a tea towel. It takes a long time to strain it completely but when it's done it will look like this...
When you've strained the pulp from the milk you can add the rest of your ingredients. The coolest part about this process is the pulp ;) which you can use as an exfoliant for your face and body! I love this stuff! I keep it refrigerated and bring it to the shower with me when I go and use it all over. It also moisturizes as it exfoliates so you come out smelling, feeling and looking yummy ;)
Then you have your milk! Which you can put in your cereal, smoothies or even just enjoy a glass of it whenever you'd like! Here's some other fun things you can do with almond milk...

Chocolate nut milk: To the recipe for vanilla almond milk, add 2 tbsp raw cacao nibs or unsweetened cocoa powder
Cinnamon milk: To the recipe for vanilla almond milk, add 1 tsp cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg
Chai milk: To the recipe for vanilla almond milk, add 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon garam masala, and 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
Sugar-free vanilla milk: In place of the dates, add stevia to taste

I'm off to soak my almonds (why does that sound dirty?) and make a Green Monster! Have a great day everyone!

The Hunger Games ♥

Please note: It's recently been brought to my attention that there are a few grammatical errors in my posts. I would just like to say they're an accident! It's because I'm usually in a huge rush (today is no exception) to complete and post them. I'm sure you've noticed that I forgot a word and it's because I'm speed typing haha! Today the spacing between paragraphs is funky because I don't have enough time to mess around with the layout. So please bare with me :)

So I went to see The Hunger Games movie last night. Of course, with theaters comes chocolate (my krypotonite) and I could not resist because I totally took a hit off of a joint before I went in (Ha!Ha). So stoned little old me goes to Shoppers Drug Mart and what do you know? My favourite Cadbury milk chocolate bar (the hazelnut one) is on sale for $4.00 and a large bag of peanut M&Ms (another favourite) are on sale for $1.99. I was completely done both before the movie was half way through! I devoured them like I had never tasted chocolate before. THAT'S what happens when you smoke weed kids. You get cravings (the munchies), you give into your cravings, you spend every penny you have in a convenient store and then you get FAT. So when I get home from the city today.. I'll have to do some crazy friggan work out! Which I will post tomorrow.

But let's deal with my guilty feelings right now and teach you readers about the BENEFITS of chocolate ;) I did some research when I got home last night and this morning when I woke up. Only to find that there are some wonderful things about chocolate that people do not speak about enough!

10 Health Benefits of Chocolate:
  • Chocolate reduces stroke risk
  • Chocolate boosts heart health
  • Chocolate fills you up ;)
  • There's evidence that say chocolate may fight diabetes
  • Chocolate protects your skin
  • Chocolate can quiet coughs
  • Chocolate boosts your mood! :)
  • Chocolate improves blood flow
  • Chocolate improves your vision
  • Chocolate may make you smarter ;)
SOURCE

...Of course most of these don't really apply to peanut M&M's but I'd like to make believe they do!

Now, onto my thoughts and feelings about the movie. I will post a spoiler alert before I ruin anything for those of you who have yet to see it. First and foremost I need to say that I wish they had picked a more attractive Peeta. Simply for the fact that they portray him to be this perfect, funny and charismatic guy in the book and in the movie - he's kinda boring. The feelings between Peeta and Katniss didn't seem as strong as they did in the book and they definitely didn't show enough of Gale and Katniss. However I did miss the first part of the movie due to my undeniable cravings. I started watching right before they announced the tributes. I also didn't fall in love with Rue the way I did in the book. I thought her acting was very poor. *SPOILER ALERT* I wasn't nearly upset when she died in the movie as I was in the book. *END OF SPOILER ALERT* I will give them credit for Caesar and Effie though. They chose impeccable actors to play both parts and I think I can speak for everyone when I say that they both met the expectations of the readers. I also think that Jennifer Lawrence did a really great job as Katniss.

 He's totally flippin' dreamy! ♥

My friend Shannon is coming to the city with me today for my doctor's appointment. Here's our favourite picture of us from my crazy 20th birthday. It was taken right before we ran out the door to catch our cab to the bar.
We've been the greatest of friends since I was in grade 9. Words cannot express enough how much I appreciate this girl's friendship. I love her to to death! ♥

I'm skipping my smoothie today, GAHHH! I literally feel like I'm going to die. Chocolate last night AND I have to skip my green smoothie today?! Fudge!! I don't have any frozen berries right now! I have to pick some up when I get back from the city. Speaking of picking up food... I've noticed how easy it is to make a grocery list now that I'm eating healthy. When you're thinking about starting to eat healthier it's really difficult to come up with meal plans and shopping lists. However, once you actually start cutting things from your diet it becomes easier and totally natural to make a grocery list that contains nothing but vitamins, nutrients and wholesome "do your body" GOOD-ness!

I'm in a hurry to get out the door so I will have to post a recipe tomorrow or later today when I get back. I may even post my work out! It will be my first "two post" day! Stay tuned!

Going bananas

Yesterday before Erin and I went for our walk we made a salmon pasta dish that was nothing less than exquisite! We had a hard time restricting ourselves to one bowl. Due to calories and carbohydrates we had to and that's why we wanted to eat our meal before we went power walking for 5 miles. I also ate a banana on the walk and 28 ounces of water. I heard that bananas give you more energy when you're working out, so I wanted to test this theory. I didn't notice much of a difference so I came home and did my research (they contain mainly sugars, so they basically give you a guilt free sugar rush for your work out) and was surprised to discover that bananas have a variety of amazing health benefits to them and I wanted to share them with all of you!

  • Stress relief
  • Reducing depression
  • Anemia
  • Constipation & diarrhea
  • Eye sight protection
  • Healthy bones
  • Healthy kidneys
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart burn
  • Morning sickness
  • Smoking
  • Ulcers
  • Nerves
  • Mosquito bites
  • Stroke risk
source

You can help of these problems just by eating a banana once a day! I put mine in my smoothie every morning and now that I'm talking about it I do notice a huge difference in my heart burn. I haven't had one problem since I started my smoothies!

I'm a little sore from my work out yesterday and I've decided to start posting the routines I do every day so that you can also do them if you'd like! I cannot believe the difference in my body since I've started working for the last 3 weeks. I believe it's mainly my diet that is keeping the weight off but definitely the exercises building the muscle tone. I can see my abdominal muscles! My love handles have shrunk by 50%! I'm fitting into clothes I never thought I would again! It's such an incredible feeling seeing my hard work pay off. As an added bonus I feel absolutely fantastic!

When I say "diet" I don't mean it in the sense that I'm dieting! I mean it as in what's in my diet every day :) So speaking of my diet... here's the YUMMIEST lunch I was speaking of! I just finished the leftovers for today's lunch!
So here's the recipe:
1 cup of organic brown rice pasta
1 can of salmon (in water, never oil!)
1/2 of a green pepper
1 red pepper

1 orange pepper
1 white onion (red would be better)

1 tablespoon of mayonnaise

I'm taking the day off today from working out and even walking because I'm entirely too sore to walk. The muscles around my knees are killing me! I'm going to soak in the bath and read Catching Fire for a while and hopefully that will relieve some of the pain.

Have a great day everyone!

Reaching goals

Today my friend Erin is here for the day and we're going to spend the day working out, eating right and finding recipes. We're making a salmon/pasta casserole for lunch and for breakfast I had my smoothie! Some of you have asked "what's a green smoothie?" so here's my recipe!
Obviously you can put anything into a smoothie! Any fruits, any vegetables and any supplements you may also like to add. I started this when my cousin told me about the Green Monster Movement. I read about it and decided I would like to try it and have been addicted ever since. It will show improvements in your skin, hair and your all around vitality. It's also a great way to make sure that you get at least one serving of both fruits and vegetables as soon as you wake up! I could go on and on about the benefits of this smoothie! Like how spinach is proven to control mood swings or that it's a great breakfast if you're in a hurry in the morning and don't have time to sit and eat. But, talking about it will not do it justice. You're just going to have to try it for yourself and reap the benefits in return!

This was my lunch yesterday!
...and it was SO delicious! ♥

I've been saying for roughly 2 weeks that I would post my vision board but it just kept slipping my mind! So here it is...
Obviously you can put anything that inspires you but there's lots of make up because I need to get a make up kit together so when I've completed school I'm more prepared. I want to start taking advantage of opportunities that normally I would pass up. I have started eating healthier, which was one of my goals. I want to buy a car and go on my dream vacation and I also want to start horse back riding again some time soon. The rest are just inspiring or "feel good" words! It's not complete because I add something new every week. Maybe I'll start posting pictures weekly of what I add to it! I hope those of you that did a vision board enjoyed the process! It was really fun for me :)

I started reading the second book of The Hunger Games series called Catching Fire. It took some time to get into but now that I've gotten into the second part of the book it's all I can think about! I absolutely love reading! And yesterday I came across the book mark that I received at my grandfather's funeral. He was an author of 150 publish books so it was only appropriate that there were book marks made in memory of him. Now I carry him around with me where ever I bring my book. I feel like my reading time is my time with him now and I enjoy reading that much more ♥
Well I'm off for the day to make my lunch and go for a work out with Erin!

Side note: I've decided to casually do the Insanity videos because I'm seeing such great results with what I'm doing now. So I don't want over do it and become a muscle head! haha!

Push yourselves harder today than you did yesterday!

Weekend-end.

Last night my best friend Matt took me out at his place to shoot a 12 gauge shot gun. It has a lot more power than I expected - that's for sure! I thought that I would be totally cool shooting it but it's a different story when you're loading the gun and you aim it. All the sudden this adrenaline rush enters you and I was overcome with fear for some reason lol! But I finally did shoot it and my ears were ringing and it wasn't easy on my shoulder either! When I shot it the second time it felt like someone had punched me as hard as they could! Even though I kept it snug to my shoulder, it still has a kick and if you're not used to it - it's going to hurt lol.
This weekend I was awful at denying my cravings! Friday I had 2 slices of pizza, 3 beers and a rye and ginger. Saturday I had all dressed chips and last night too! However, I was really good otherwise. My breakfasts and lunches were healthy!

This was my lunch for both Saturday and Sunday...

Now, you may be thinking "perogies aren't healthy!" but I'm not dieting! And perogies aren't NOT healthy for you. They're just not ideal if you're trying to lose weight, which I'm not, I'm trying to tone. Carbs are also easily burned off after my work out!

This is my abdominal work out that I just started on Friday. It absolutely killed my abdominal muscles for the weekend but I noticed a difference in my abs the very next day. I'm glad I had the weekend to recover because I cannot wait to do it again today! I'm also going to do the push up video.

So I just finished my smoothie and it's time to get ready for a work out! Even though she doesn't look like it right now...
She actually can't wait to go for our 5 mile walk! She's been asking all weekend and actually dragged me out of the house yesterday for a short 1 mile walk. She's too cute to deny! Hope you all had as wonderful of a weekend as I did! :)

Cloud 9

Hey everyone!

I know it's been some time since I've last posted but I've had a lot going on in my life and didn't have time to post. Last Thursday I left for the city for a doctor's appointment and I ended up staying until Monday afternoon. I had a wonderful and much needed visit with my little sister and my aunt. When I got home I was exhausted and completely worn out from my week and I just wanted to shower and go to bed. I woke up with a completely different mind set on life and I can't explain how happy I have been this passed week. Hence why I titled this post "cloud 9".

I've dropped 11lbs in the last 3 weeks and I'm so incredibly proud of myself! I have been walking 5-8 miles a day for the last 3 weeks (except 5 days in the city) and eating the best I can (again, except 5 days in the city). I've quit smoking unless my brother comes around or I'm stressed over the Leafs' game. So I'll say I have 2 smokes a week - which is nothing! My eating habits are extraordinarily different than they were a month ago. For instance, today I'm having a veggie platter with roasted red pepper hummus and 2 deviled eggs but instead of mayo I'm using three cheese ranch dressing :) ..but just enough!

I left out that I had 1 1/2 cups of potato leek soup and a croissant and a glass of chocolate milk. I try to eat a lot during the day. Apparently I don't eat enough calories? I'm supposed to eat just over 1600! Craziness! That will never happen lol.

I went for a casual walk this morning with my neighbours but not near as long as I usually walk and not at the normal pace I usually walk either. I'm going to try and find a yoga routine today that I can do once a week on the days where I take a break from my walks. I've also been doing sit ups, push ups, bench presses and squats. Also, I'm going to start running up and down my stairs every day for 10 minutes to work out my butt!

I found this picture today and it made me miss my long hair so much! Hopefully it all grows back and then some by summertime!

Have a great weekend everyone! I'll post on Monday!

Still sick...

I was hoping by today I'd be feeling a lot better - apparently I was dreaming. I woke up with the most incredible head ache, like I had drank a 26er last night and was dealing with the consequences this morning. I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday in Toronto and I swear this woman is going to think I'm a hypochondriac because I have so many health problems. However, if she doesn't start taking them seriously I'll be pulling my records and going to another doctor. My chronic migraines aren't normal! She actually had the audacity to tell me that I might just have to deal with them! It took everything in me not to choke her. I swear doctor's are a joke and a waste of a good education.

Today I'm going to give myself a facial and take Phoebe for a walk. It's absolutely beautiful here and I love to take advantage of a nice day. There's hardly any snow left on the ground and I'm super excited for summer time now more than ever. Why you might ask? Ohh just because I stepped on the scale this morning and noticed I dropped TEN POUNDS in TWO WEEKS! Beach Body Insanity is only going to kick it up a notch too! So excited to be in the best shape of my life. We're doing grocery shopping today and I'm excited to get a bunch of healthy food to eat.

I'm sorry today's post isn't that great! I'm not feeling well and I'm kind of in a hurry to get outside before I lose sun light. I also have a crap load of things to do today! I'll think of a great concept for tomorrow! I promise. Oh also, my camera died this weekend so I have no way of taking a picture of my vision board for you! It's so pretty though :) I love it! Stay tuned, I'm going to charge my batteries tonight!

Sick day

Self explanatory. I'm too sick to get out of bed for anything :( I'll post tomorrow. I updated song of the week though!

Vitamins!

Usually people take a multivitamin to be sure that they get their daily dose of vitamins. However, as I mentioned yesterday we can only absorb 20% of vitamins when they're in pill form. Leading to vitamin deficiencies and later down the road: health problems. Here's a list of ways you can be sure to get your daily dose of vitamins naturally...

Vitamin A is essential for healthy eyes, skin, bones, immune system strength and even effects your reproductive organs. Women need 2,333 IU of vitamin A daily and men need 3,000 IU daily. Here are some foods that you can include in your daily diet to ensure that you get your recommended dose. Liver, fish oil, sweet potatoes, carrots, dark lettuce, butternut squash, dried herbs, cantaloupes, whole milk, dried apricots and fortified breakfast cereals like oatmeal.
Vitamin B helps your metabolism, cell growth and division and also improves the functioning of the immune system and central nervous system. Women's recommended daily dose is 3 mcg and men's recommended daily does is 2 mcg. When it comes to B1, B2 you only need to take between 1.1 and 1.5 daily. It is only vitamin B6 that men and women need larger quantities of. 14mg for women and 16mg for men each day. Foods that you can include into your every day diet to ensure your dose of vitamin B are: meat products, oysters, eggs, shellfish, chilly peppers, bell peppers, turnips, lentils, molasses, kombucha, nutritional yeast and tempeh.

Vitamin C destroys the harmful free radicals, enhances immune system and production of good cholesterol, promotes iron absorption and lessens cancer risk. The recommended daily dosage is 60mg, which you can achieve by eating any/all of the following daily: oranges, lemons, strawberries, mango, kiwi, papaya, raw broccoli, spinach, kale, brussel sprouts, red and green peppers.

Vitamin D helps in the regulation of blood sugar and blood pressure, checks calcium imbalances, helps in cell differentiation and prevents ailments like osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, etc. I personally have a severe deficiency in this vitamin and I take 5000 IU daily of it (not the best way).  The recommended dosage for adults is 15mcg daily. You can get it daily and NATURALLY through these foods: yoghurt, margarine, ready-to-eat cereals, beef livers, eggs, fishes like sardines, salmons, tuna and mackerel, milk, cheese, fortified soy products, mushrooms and orange juice.

Vitamin E safeguards skin from ultraviolet rays, checks cell damage due to free radicals and prevents ailments like prostate cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. The recommended dosage for adults is 400 IU daily. You can get it by eating the following foods: mustard greens, turnip greens, sunflower seeds and oil, wheat germ oil, asparagus, broccoli, papayas, pumpkins, tomatoes, nuts like almonds and hazelnut, collard, mangoes, avocados and rock fish.

A great way to be sure you're getting all of these vitamins is by making a smoothie. You can mix together multiple (yummy) ingredients and get all of your daily vitamins right at the start of your day! I absolutely love smoothies and I personally think that every single person should have at least one a day - if not more. It's a great way to incorporate healthy eating into your lifestyle and very simple!

I'm going to make some lunch and possibly start on that stupid beach body challenge. I hope this post inspires you all to eat healthier and make sure you get your vitamins!

Love, Inspiration and Happiness always,

P.s. I'll be posting a picture of my vision board tomorrow!

Insanity

Usually when I start writing a blog I really have no idea what I'm going to write about and today is no exception. In fact, I almost forgot to post. So as I'm writing at this very moment I'm still deciding what I'm going to write about. Multiple ideas come to mind when I think of blogging. I can talk about anything I want which is too broad of a spectrum for me and tends to get me mildly confused and even slightly overwhelmed. I'm no stranger to being overwhelmed - nore confusion for that matter. Both are a regular occurrence for me and tend to make me look more stupid and incompetent than not.

Today is such a poop day. It's overcast, crazy windy and rain (of course) had to join the party. In other words... don't straighten your hair, wear white, put your good shoes on or forget your umbrella. Breaking any one of those rules could ruin your day at absolutely any moment. I had planned on going for a run but that plan epically failed when I looked out the window - fml. How am I supposed to get a beach body when I can't even go outside to walk? I could brave the storm, because after all, I'm sort of being a big baby and possibly even looking for an excuse to stay in bed.

I'm going to visit my friend at 4 and before that I would like to clean my bedroom to some degree. It gets messy so fast! Like a tornado comes through and destroys everything and I have no idea what happened. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. After my visit with Cory I'm going to pick up my friend Sarah from work at 9 and we're going to her house to watch Jersey Shore. I don't even care if some of you think it's stupid. I love it! Snooki is the best thing to ever happen to reality TV. She's has no shame what-so-ever (like me) and she's absolutely hilarious. Love that little meat ball!

I would also like to get started on Beach Body Insanity today. I bought it a long time ago and it comes with a nutrition guide, calender, videos and more. Below, I've posted a video of one girl's story. She wanted to lose her baby weight and in 60 days, she did just that!

If you really stick with it you'll be in the shape you want to be in by the summer. Which is why I'm starting now. I'm determined to be in the best shape I've ever been in by the summer!

I hope you all enjoy as much of this rainy, craptastic, super not awesome day as you can. Although, those of you from Beverly hills, California and Florida that read my blog are soaking up the rays, the rest of us here in Canada are suffering from vitamin D deficiency today. Pick up some vitamin D from your local drug store, it's the one vitamin that every person needs more of, along with B12.

DID YOU KNOW?! That people can only absorb 20% of their vitamin supplements? (Multi vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin C) So getting it naturally is the best way to go! Eat right ;) I'll post more on this tomorrow.. so stay tuned!

Sidenote: Thank you all so very much for your support. The fact that you each take time out of your day to read my thoughts and opinions means more than you'll ever know. I received a comment today on yesterday's post that really made my heart melt and I wanted to share it with all of you...

" Last Summer was the best Summer time romance I have ever had.. and I look forward to every summer ahead with the same love ♥"

If that didn't make your heart melt, I don't know what will.

#KONY2012

It's not a very happy hump day. I'm super bummed out because pms gets the better of me every month. I think my whole world is crashing down on me when really I'm just having a bad hair day or I get a pimple.

Anyways, there's a person named Joseph Kony that I want everyone to know about. If you have just under thirty minutes today to watch this video, it will change your life and your way of thinking. I promise by the end of it you will want to watch more and be more informed. It's such a well done documentary. Please watch and share with everyone you can! We need to make him famous to get him captured.

You can also find out what your community is doing April 20th to support this cause. I know it's 420 but you can celebrate two causes! I am ;)

I'm off to go job hunting. Fuck my life and the free world.

The Hunger Games

Even though I only post on week days it feels like it's been a lot longer than three posts since I've posted last. I blame Suzanne Collins and her masterful writing. I completely removed myself from the world (of any kind) to read The Hunger Games for two days. It was amazing and now I'm onto Catching Fire (the second book) and can hardly contain my excitement in anticipation of the movie.

Lately I've been really excited to read, which I take as a sort of sign. Even though it was the beginning of fall that I broke my relationship off with my live-in boyfriend of two years, I still feel as though I had a lot of damage control I had to do. Through the duration of our relationship I stopped doing the things I enjoyed most. From simple things like lighting candles to important things like exercising and eating right. Lately I've found myself going back to those things and finding the joy in my life again.
I also realized there's three main components to "moving on". First there's getting over that person. Which in no way, shape or form am I taking a jab at my ex, but that was not hard for me in the least. Second, getting over the relationship. Getting used to the fact that when you reach for a hug or a kiss, they're not going to be there. You no longer have a hand to hold, or arms to be held in. You now have to find the ground under you that you lost when you let that person sweep you off your feet. Third, there's getting over the break up. Most break ups don't go as smoothly as we'd like them to go and this was no exception. He was determined he wasn't leaving without saying the harshest of words and taking my self esteem with him. It took me a while to get over how someone who was supposed to love me "forever" could say those awful things to me. Eventually I learned to be grateful that I ended things with such a mean person. You can only give someone so many chances before you realize there's no hope and you need to move on.
So (skipping self destructive stage) now I'm at a place where I'm ready to enjoy those things again and be myself. Lighting candles, taking baths, reading books, exercising, etc. Today is no exception, I just had to make time to post because it's been three days (my apologies) but I'm off now to get back into my book and possibly have a morning bubble bath! It sounds more enticing the more I think about it.

OH! One last thing for you Gossip Girl fans...
I'm watching season four at the moment and just finished episode 18 (Lilly's sister comes to town, upper east side photo shoot) and I just have to say..

When in the fuck are Blair and Chuck going to be happily ever after?

I'm dying here.

Also, I got braces again yesterday! My brother's calling me "The Black and Decker Pecker Wrecker" ...Hahahaha! I laughed so hard when he said that. They should be off by the summer time though and I'll be a happy girl again! :)

Have a good day everyone,
Love, morning bubble baths and good books always,
